Recommended Personal Guard Dogs

Pets can sometimes be used as security sentinels in our homes to safeguard our belongings and our premises. In this essence, the dogs are the most likely candidate for this role. As such let’s look at the various dogs’ breeds that might suit this function in our homes. Listed below are a few breeds that we can consider as best protection and guard dog breeds;

  • Malinois

  • German Shepherd

  • Rottweiler

  • Doberman Pinscher

Malinois Dog

The name “Malinois” is a derivative from the word Malines, it is a French name for this kind of breed and their origin is from the city of Mechelen. Some history here, the Flemish people are Belgium’s ethnic majority and they used to live in the northern part of Belgium, hence this breed was derived from the Flemish city of origin, Mechelen which is in Belgium, Germany, the Netherlands.
This breed can be classified as a cross breed between Belgian Shepherd dog and it originated from the city of Belgium. The Malinois is a medium-to-large sized breed of a dog. Their lifespan can vary from 12 to 14 years.
They are watchful and fully alert, they appear friendly but sometimes can be a bit stubborn but they a confident breed. Hard-working and very protective with an active personality. They normally come in mahogany or black-tipped fawn. As for weight, the male is about 29 to 34 kgs and the female dogs are from 25 to 30 kgs. And the nominal height for a male is about 61 to 66 cm and for the female, they are about 56 to 61 cm in height.
As a guard dog, they were primarily bred for personal protection work, or for police work such as aiding in search and rescue functions. Or sometimes in sports arenas like the in the Belgian Ring or the French Ring or sometimes even in the Schutzhund or the Mondioring arenas.
This particular breed was initially used in the Secret Service of the United States and also in the Royal Australian Air Force and was extensively used by the Israeli Defence Forces under the Oketz Unit as an independent canine special forces’ unit. The Oketz unit initially favored the German Shepherds or the Rottweiler but along the way, the Malinois was preferred with the lighter build, such as they more agile and active.
Many handlers picked the Malinois for their perfect size fit and with their shorter coats and neutral colors they were less prone to heatstroke compared to the short-haired Dutch Shepherd.
Police agencies preferred the Belgian Malinois as they were increasingly popular and smaller than the German Shepherds. Most handlers like the ability to physically pick them up or carry them when required. Malinois are well known for their police work, primarily used for tracking criminals or more for patrolling troubled vicinity, or for holding of suspects in a confinement area.

German Shepherd

This breed’s officially recognized name is German Shepherd Dog. The German Shepherd is a medium to a large-sized working dog that originated from Germany. This breed is known as the Alsatian in Britain and Ireland.
The lifespan for this breed is between 9 to 13 years and they normally weight for a Male is about 30 to 40 kg and for a female is about 22–32 kg. The nominal height for the male is about 60 to 65 cm and for a female is between 55 to 60 cm. They normally come in Black, Black & Silver, Black & Gold, Red & Black or Sable.
In terms of temperament, they are curious and alert, very obedient and confident. Intelligent and outrageous. According to registration records, the German Shepherd is the second-most popular dog breed worldwide.
This breed is extensively bred out, but the Dutch Shepherd breed was not subjected to such an extensive breeding, as such the German Shepherds were more of a popular choice as a working dog. But this adversely affected the health and the temperament of the individual dog as well as the breed. Besides German Shepherds were deployed mainly by the military and were trained for scout duties or to parachute them from an aircraft.
Also, they were used to warn soldiers of any enemy presence in the vicinity or to detect if there are any booby traps laid out in their paths.
In the search and rescue work, the German Shepherd was widely used for their distinct scent- tracking ability in a wide scope of work, like searching for buried human or dead bodies, or in the narcotics detection work, or sometime in the mine or explosives detection work.
They are more suited for these lines of work because of their keen sense of smell and their ability to work without any distractions. For the visually impaired, initially, the German Shepherd was the breed chosen almost exclusively to be used as a guide dog.
As a versatile breed, they do excel in this area due to their strong sense of attachment to duty, and with their mental abilities. Besides their fearlessness and their attachment to their owners.
German Shepherd Dogs are mainly used for herding work or tending the sheep when they are grazing in the meadows next to the gardens or crop fields.
Besides, they are used to patrol the boundaries to keep sheep from trespassing and ravaging the gardens and crops.
In Germany and most other places, these skills are tested in the utility dog trials known as the “HGH” or the Herdengebrauchshund trials. They are tested specifically for herding as utility dog trials.

The Dobermann or the Doberman Pinscher is the next in line and in around 1890 the founder, Mr. Karl Friedrich Louis Dobermann a tax collector from Germany was the original developer of this Dobermann breed. They normally have a long muzzle and they can stand on their paws as they are not heavy-footed. The average lifespan can vary from 10 to 13 years in all. We do have a variety of colors for this breed, like in Black or white, fawn or fawn with rust. Or blue or black rust, red rust, and blue rust or simply tan colored. This breed was eventually imported into the United States and Canada from Germany as more and more people grew to like them for their abilities.

There are other dog breeds that we can consider as a personal guard dog or as a pet, but these are the most sort after breeds in my view.  For these pet’s well-being and proper growth, I would also highly recommend anybody seeking to get a pet in the near future to have a conducive environment that will be suitable for their personal growth. Be it a small or a big pet, having a private house with extra space for them to run around and feel at home would be the best bet. However, if it’s a private condominium, like Belgravia Green Condo then I would highly suggest that it comes with extra strata areas for them to go for evening walks or even to run around for exercise. I hope with the above information given here you can pick a pet for your needs.
